Living With Books

Share Your Bookshelf and Enter to Win a Bookshelf of Books

We want to know how you live with your books. We want to see your bookshelves, we want to know how you organize your bookshelves! The sweepstakes ended January 4, 2013, but we still want to hear from you!

Do you do it by author, do you organize by genre? Maybe you have more than one bookshelf for different kinds of books, maybe you have a bookshelf in every room of your house. Or maybe your books sit in happy piles around the room. However you do it, we want to know how you live with your books.

It’s easy to participate! All you have to do is send us a photo or video of your bookshelf:

* Tweet your photo/video to us @ReadItForward and use hashtag #shareyourbookshelf
* Enter via our Read It Forward Facebook app
* Email your photo/video to readitforward@randomhouse.com
* Post a link to your photo in a comment below

We’ll share your photo with the Read It Forward community, and you’ll be automatically entered in a fantastic sweepstakes. In mid-January 2013, winners will be randomly selected from among the photos/videos submitted. Prizes include:

* ONE GRAND PRIZE WINNER: An IKEA bookshelf and 25 books, chosen by the winner from among books featured on ReadItForward.com

* TWO RUNNERS UP: 10 books, chosen by the winner from among books featured on ReadItForward.com

These are great prizes, and we’re super excited. But we’re even more excited to learn more about you and how you live with your books!

For instance, maybe you go to the book store and buy a huge bag of books. What do you do when you come home? Which books do you pull off the shelf, and how do you decide? What do you do with those books? Do they go in the garage? Maybe you give them away, maybe you sell them to a used book store.

Is there a book that always makes it on your shelf, a book that’s made it with you through move after move? Is there one book that your shelves would feel empty without?

How do e-books affect the way you live with your books? Do ever find yourself buying the e-book and enjoying it on your reader, but then you just have to go out and buy the physical book, too, because you want it on your shelf? We want to know!

Share what you’re reading, share how you live with your books, share your bookshelf with Read It Forward. Tweet us! Facebook us! Email us! We want to see your photos and videos of your shelves, we want to hear your stories! We’re so excited to learn more about how you live with your books.

Thanks for reading it forward – we’re so glad you’re here!

    This is a neat idea.

  • jack hrusoff

You are NOT a reader, as the books behind you are virtually all paperback, post-Vintage 1987 large format and of title the last ten years. Additionally, the spines are not cracked and there is little sign of sunfade or humidification. Nice contest, and best to winner as I already have 3,500 volumes and was once a librarian

    • Kira, editor at Read It Forward

Wow, Jack, 3,500 books! That’s truly impressive. I keep most of my books in storage – recently moved from NYC to Colorado and haven’t unpacked them yet. Will be like Christmas morning when I do.

  • Lori Alcorn

I tried using the facebook app thingy but when looking for my post I could not see my shelves so here is a link to the twitter post for them https://twitter.com/lorialcorn2006/status/274280592416321536

    • Kira, editor at Read It Forward

Thanks so much, Lori, we got it! Great shelf – love the way you combine objects and books.

  • Jenna Gall

We have two bookshelves in our tiny apartment that contains some of mine and my husband’s favorite books. Since getting a nook we have been doing most our reading through Ebooks. But we still love to read the bible through hard copy. I also do a lot of exchanging of hard copies with my sister and some friends. I still get excited walking into book stores. My favorite place to be! I posted my bookshelf on RIF Facebook page. Enjoy!

    • Kira, editor at Read It Forward

Thanks so much, Jenna! We got your photo – it’s so cool that you have an heirloom bookshelf! We agree with you about book stores – our favorite places in the world.

I don’t know how to put it on Twitter, but I directed you to my blog, and the photo is on my blog.

I just emailed my photo, and think this is a wonderful contest! I had a difficult time choosing which spot to take a photo of, as each of our three boys as well as our own room has a “personal” bookshelf. Then there is the not so neat pile in the office of books that are related to my blog and podcast. The one we choose was the shelf of miss match books, some we all like, in our “quiet room” where no electronic devices (other than the CD player for audio books) are allowed. Happens to be the most popular room in our house!

  • Pam Pinkert

I am an avid reader and I had books in every room of my home. I am now rebuilding my library because my home burnt down on the 11th of Dec. So I cannot post any pic’s. I read most everything except Harloquin books. Over my 54 years, books have been the one constant in my life, they have taken me places I will never get to go, and places that do not exist, comforted me, made me laugh and cry, taught me things you would never learn in school and entertained me since I first learned to read. If I have a few spare moments, it will most always be spent devouring a book.

  • Gina Sandoval

I entered in December and never saw my picture up on fb and now the contest has ended. How does that work, I even emailed to see you had received it but never heard from anyone via email or facebook.

  • Pat May

I am so disappointed that I didn’t get the post on the share your bookshelf. I for some reason don’t get most of the posts. :(
They’re not in my Spam folder either :(
