My new novel, Star of the North, is a thriller set in North Korea inspired by my 2012 trip to the country as part of a tour group. After that trip and from my work co-authoring The Girl With Seven Names, the memoir of North Korean defector Hyeonseo Lee, I understood how deeply crucial these stories are to understanding a country and regime—and, most importantly, its citizens—that we so often see in the headlines. Here are six more memoirs from North Korea.
