Like most people, sometimes I read to escape reality. Each book I pick up pulls me into a new world and gives me a taste of a different life. A few pages or a maybe a chapter or two and I’m ready to go back to the real world. But sometimes I’m looking for a momentary respite from the problems I’ve created for the characters in my own books, a world that may be fictional, but feels very real to me. In that case, I tend to go back to the same familiar favorites.
At first glance, the books on this list seemed to have very little in common, but then I realized they encompass most of what I look for in a book; quirky characters, unconventional families, honest emotion and a little humor—qualities I hope readers will find in my own Magical Cats mysteries, along with their own escape.
