Book Groups and Pajamas
By Lisa Unger

I love book groups. What could be better than a gathering of smart, funny, engaged woman (well, it usually is all woman, and maybe a husband or two) talking about books? Generally, wine and snacks are involved. And I’m usually in my pajamas.

It’s true – a couple of times a month, sometimes every week, I join in book group discussions of my novels around the country. One evening it might be Seattle, another Minneapolis, the next night New Jersey or Pennsylvania. Of course, they’re doing all the wine drinking and snack eating. And I’m in my pajamas, usually in my office, chatting with them via speakerphone while my daughter sleeps.

I have a theory about book groups. Book groups don’t actually get together to talk about books. They get together to talk about something much more important. There’s a popular misconception that people turn to fiction because it provides an escapist pleasure from the mundane everyday. But most readers – and writers – know that’s not true.

We turn to books not to escape from, but to understand life. And when we get together to talk about books, we’ve really come together to discuss our lives and the lives of the characters we met. Because a great story is a little slice of life – it shows us something, teaches us something. Story helps us to understand each other and ourselves better.

What I love the most about visiting with book groups (as opposed to book signings where most people are coming to get their copies and haven’t read yet) is that everyone has already read the book. They’re teeming with questions, and they are as involved with my characters as I am. We chat about process, the vector of my career, how I research, and the inner lives of my characters, often things that are not on the page.

Of course, I don’t answer every question. Sometimes I leave people hanging. But that’s my job: to keep my readers in suspense!

I have a couple of local groups that I visit with every year in person. (I do manage to get myself dressed for those, in case you were wondering.) And that’s been a really lovely experience . . . to grow with my readers, to expand on a conversation that started with the last book, to be able to drink the wine and eat the snacks everyone else is always enjoying!

People think that the writing life is a solitary one – and in many ways it is. But I have been blessed enough to be invited into the homes of fabulous people across the country to talk about my work. And that is one of the many gifts of my profession. I create alone. But I’m then allowed to share my stories with the world. And what better way to do that than one living room at a time?

I like to buy my books 2nd hand mostly but when I do go into a bookstore I ALWAYS leave with at least 3 new books to read. I have only read physical books I never have experienced an e book. And if I did have a e book reader it looks soo much easier to by a book so I would probably spend A LOT of money!

Book groups are not only a way of reading a fantastic book, but they are a way of connecting with others of like tastes. We usually vote on a book to read after a member suggests one, and they are always a physical book that is read, never an ebook. One of the members personally knows a published author, and we are working on having that author attend one of our meetings!

We have a small group of 5-6 who meet weekly socially and then monthly to discuss the current book we have chosen. Most of our books are recommendations from someone in the group who has already read the book or has fallen in love with an author and so we choose that author’s newest publication. Most of our books we get from Christian bookstores/sites as we all go to the same church (or used to, but same denomination now).

I have not read Lisa Unger’s books before but the excerpt and her personal information about attending book clubs has definitely got me interested in reading her newest novel. I do love suspense and dark mysteries are my favorite reading these days! I look forward to reading a new-to-me author’s works.

Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read?

Our book club rotates so that one person hosts each month & picks a book. Since we are all so different the selection varies as well. We read lots of fiction. We are also members of Goodreads where each of us puts in books we want to read and get our recommendations from there as well.

    1) Our group meets monthly and we rotate hosting. The host chooses the book we read – fiction (most often), non fiction, biography, historical fiction, best sellers and more.

    3) Our members get their books from all different places – city library, university library, local bookstore, on-line book store and ebooks.

    4) We have three times had author’s call into the book group. We have had mixed success – we enjoy hearing about the book from the author, but that seems to preclude our group talking about the book. We spend the time listening to the author, with a few of our questions being answered. Next time we need to schedule the chat midway through our meeting so we can discuss the book some and decide on the most important questions to ask the author.

We get our ideas of what to read from all over the place. Some of us get recommendations from family or friends (some of them are in book clubs too)or sometimes we get them from sites like this or from lists from the library. Sometimes one of us reads a good book and suggests it for our next reading. Usually at our book clubs there are several book suggestions and we just take a vote. The majority chooses the next book to read!

I was reluctant to start utilizing e-books, although secretly I wanted to. As an avid reader and long time lover of books, I felt that somehow, I would be “cheating” on physical paper books. I received an eReader as a gift early this year, and honestly my reading habits have become more voracious; I read more and faster now. Most times eBooks are less expensive than physical books, as I am still a woman living on a post-recession budget! Generally, I buy from Barnes & Noble or Amazon, for really popular books, I do more intense bargain shopping, utilizing other online sites. Regardless, my love of books will never cease so I will buy both until one or the other becomes obsolete! I just want to read and I can’t wait to get my hands on Lisa Unger’s newest smart women’s fiction thriller “Darkness My Old Friend”! Happy reading everyone!

Our group is composed of 12 female friends. We meet monthly, each member choosing a book for their month. We end up reading a variety of genres, which broadens the scope for many of us. In the past few months, we have read historical fiction, YA fantasy, non-fiction-neuroscience; but over the years, I don’t think there is a genre we haven’t read.

We have never had an author participate in one of our groups before, but we are a fun and welcoming group.

Darn it! At first glance, I thought she was onto something – I was gonna suggest that the dress code for my book group be changed to pjs. Yeah, it is always all women, & no, we don’t usually talk only about the book. But the conversations are always thought-provoking & the gatherings uplifting. We almost all still read physical books, except for one member who has a Kindle & managed to read last month’s book in its entirety at jury duty. We throw out ideas for books & decide by consensus, but we are usually in agreement about the next few books to read, & just have to decide in what order they should be read. Sometimes it’s a book that’s just been released & its reviews have caught our attention; other times we return to a favorite author or choose a classic must-read that we have somehow missed. Thanks for offering this giveaway.

Our book group is fortunate to be in a city with quite a few published authors. We’ve invited several of them to meet with us, and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and hearing about their work. (In one case the author was related to a member, which was especially interesting.) We’ve also done a “phone meeting” with an author, and it was good to have a chance to talk with one who could not visit in person.

I’m in a book club of one, I hope that counts. I read books of all kinds but prefer fiction, thriller/suspense and fantasy. When I get hooked on an author or character(s) I tend to devour everything I can get my hands on. Needless to say “Darkness My Old Friend” is right up my alley. Darn… I guess this means that I’m going to have to read Fragile too. [wink, wink]

My group mostly reads fiction, with some mystery/suspense/thrillers thrown in from time to time. We have actually thought of branching off to have a straight thriller group because there seems to be a dividing line between those of us who love that genre and those who “can’t stomach” it.

Thank you so much for always offering all of these wonderful books for us to read.
My group consists of two of my close friends and myself, just a small intimate group. We typically purchase our books either from our small town local book shop or I have also purchased from Borders. (However they have recently just closed that location :( Sad!) Nevertheless, we love to read and discuss the books, typically over coffee and baked goods… it all just seems to go together!

Our book group, which is organized through the library and meets in a study room there, is technically a mystery book club, although we do occassionally read books outside of this genre. We generally get recommendations from friends and family and published reviews, and the group leader also offers suggestions. We discuss the options and decide on books to read. Unless book club members own the books, we have been ordering them through interlibrary loan. Saves money and supports the library system. Win-win!

our group loves to find a random topic from past or current events, then we all read a fiction book with that topic and individually we explore historical accounts and books. for example we did the magdeleine launderies of Ireland and blood diamonds from Africa. its a fun andeasy way to really broaden discussion of the topic and how the fiction novel handles it in the story. fun and interesting when you have a group doing the research as a whole to lighten the load and keep it simple.

I buy most of my books online. I don’t have a lot of time to get to a bookstore, maybe only once a month. I also find it much easier to browse online for books with the “books recommended for you” features on most sites. Even though I was gifted a Nook almost a year now, I have yet to use it. It is still in it’s box. I just love the feel of regular books. I don’t think I could ever give them up for ebooks!

My book club is a very eclectic group, so we draw each time to see which genre we will read from. It’s opened us up to some that we may have tried, and we also try to have food that was either found in the book or comes from the area/time period it is set in.

Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read?

From library or new books that come out that the group interested in. Also we give each group members a chace to pick a book for the whole group to read.

    • What genre does your group read the most: fiction, thriller/suspense, historical fiction, memoir/biography?

As I stated above, each group member pick a book for the whole group to read per rotation, thus, we read almost any genre. My favoriate, thriller, mystery.

    • Where do you buy most of your books? Do you read physical books, eBooks, both?

Mostly physical books. But lately we read ebooks too either pdf format (sent from authors for book review) or from amazon

    • Has your group ever attended an author event together or had an author call in for a chat? If so, tell us about it

Not attened any event yet. Did email chat with a few for book review purpose.

I’ll answer all of the questions- I love talking about my book group! (we call ourselves The Little Book Group That Could)
1- Each month, one member selects a book. It is entirely their decision- they will also host that month(we sign up at our holiday dinner in December) They choose from a variety of places- book reviews, neighbors recommendations, talk shows

2- We read all genres- memoirs, nonfiction, fiction- you name it, we’re read it! (and we also know what every member’s faves and least faves are, and enjoy teasing them!)

3- I used to do all of the book ordering but it became too complicated (I would look at the usual suspects- overstock.com, barnes and noble, amazon, borders) so now everyone is on their own. This works well with the rise in Kindle and Nook, as some members use eBooks. Most folks go to Barnes and Noble, I think.

4- We were lucky enough to have an author come to our book group- there was even an article in the paper! Joshua Henkin, author of Matrimony, attended our book group.

I don’t have an actual book group that I meet with. My boyfriend and I read books together and discuss them and when I meet up with girlfriends we often times talk about the current books we read, but no organized group meetings.

I buy my books from anywhere adn everywhere!! Online, thrift stores, dollar type stores, big box stores, where ever they sell books. I do not read ebooks because it’s too hard for my eyes to stare at the screen that long. I prefer physical books for several other reasons. I like the smell of a new book. Weird, I know, but I do! It’s also easier to share books than swap e-readers. Plus, I’m not good with modern technology!!

I purchase most of my books at Barnes & Noble. They always have a tremendous selection!! I mostly read fictional books. There’s something about going to a “fantasy land” when reading a book, that nothing else (such as TV, radio, internet) can compare to. I belong to a small book club of just a few people (myself and a few co-workers). We get most of our recommendations from friends or other co-workers who recommend new books to us.

I am a member of three book groups; we come to consensus about which books to read from readers’ recommendations, Bookmarks magazine, reviews in online/other publications and the new works of a favorite author. We read our books in a variety of ways–physical books (some like their hardcovers!), e-books and CDs or playaways. We have read many literary fiction, some historical fiction, some biographies/memoirs and a few nonfiction selections. We have had an author visit us, held conference calls with authors, gone to hear authors speak in person, and viewed movies from books together too. We just love to read and share books and would love to win your giveaway!

I buy my books off of Amazon and from Barnes & Noble. I prefer physical books, but I do have ebooks on my phone. (:

My friend and I write a book review for a small publication in our town. It is hard to answer your question in regard to book recommendations. There are so many avenues that I use to pick a book. Often I pick a book by perusing the bookstore, taking friends recommendations or on occasion I will pick it just because I like the cover and it sounds interesting. However, the strongest influence is the number of stars it receives on the Barnes and Noble web site.

And I typically read physical books but I do have a small collection of ebooks that I can read on my computer. No ereader yet! but maybe for Christmas!

Unfortunately, I don’t participate in a reading group as I am currently working and going to school at night. I do read on my own and have been since I have been able to read. I actually miss the “RIF” trucks that use to come to my school every so often. I feel reading is a great way to escape and become a part of someone else’s world. I also find that it’s cheaper than going on vacation!
I usually buy my books and then recycle them to local schools and libraries. Of course there are a few books that I do keep, but over all, I donate because sometimes there isn’t enough fuding to provide new books for different communities. If it wasn’t for books, I don’t know where I would be today.

We are a group of women who get together every Monday afternoon to knit and discuss the books we have read. We read books that are recommended by members of the group. They might come from a daughter living in a far away place or from a member of the group. Good books are shared with the members of the group. We read light fiction, historical books, biographies, suspense, religious, etc. Amazon is a common source for the books. ebooks are starting to become part of the group. Various members of the group have attended book signings of local authors.

Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read?
    A. Our book club has been meeting since 1993 in the Northern Virginia area outside Washington, DC. Our recommendations come from each member and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Through the years, and being in the melting pot of a large metro area, we have said goodbye and hello to a large number of women with a diversity of backgrounds. I wait with anticipation for the next member in rotation to pick a book, as she will undoubtedly pick a book she has wanted to read because of her own experiences and cultural/religious/etc. background. It is sometimes not a book I would choose, but usually one I was glad I read. No where else can you learn so much in three hours then by listening to the diverse perspectives of the club members who “experience” the book “picker’s” book through their own eyes. Our club members are diverse in age, race, educational level, and religious preferences. I leave each book club meeting with a “wow” feeling…my eyes being opened to the diversity of opinions that arise from all of us reading the same text. Healthy debates often emerge, but with each member showing great respect for each other’s opinions. What makes our group so attractive to others and to the members is this atmosphere. I think it works because the members each get a chance to pick a book that means something to them and then get a chance to faciliate a discussion on that meaning. I wouldn’t change our book-selection process at all because of this wonderful opportunity to commune with each reader on an individual, yet group, basis.

I so enjoyed Lisa’s theory about book groups. I always feel I go on a mini vacation when I love a book. But she is so right – we discuss the book and how it fits into our lives and what we learned, etc. Lately we read mostly historical fiction and a few thrillers. We read hard copy and often get our books at the local library. This book sounds sooooo interesting – thanks for the opportunity!

books help me make sense of life overall. Normally, whenever I find myself asking “why” I can find solace and understanding in a good, well written novel. A novel itself, is ‘novel’ in that I often wonder how much of the actual stories, themes, tones, etc, are really life lessons the authors is helping convey to the world, through their work. Lucky us (!!!) the reader, who is the recipient of their insights and life lessons.

Our book group was established in 2003 and we meet once per month. We usually get our choices from members who have read the book and also from other book groups that some are members of. We try to vary our genre’s as much as possible and we do readers choice for Women’s History month in March. We have e-readers, library cards and hardcopy purchasers, sometimes we even share a book if time allows. Some of our members prefer to not to buy books so we often do not do what is a current bestseller as they are so hard to get at the library (that is when we often have to read quick and share a copy). I am looking forward to checking this site out. Thanks!

Being in the military, my fellow book groupers are spread near and far. We tend to take turns picking a book that sounds interesting to one of us, is something we are currently wanting to learn more about, or even one that has just been released that we know nothing about. This definitely keeps the book choices exciting! We like to read historical fiction, mystery, thriller/suspense….anything, really. Since we’re in different locations, Amazon is sometimes the easiest way to all pick up the same book if we are unable to find it at our local bookstores. Thank goodness for the Internet! This book definitely sounds like one we would like!

What an exciting opportunity to have a chance to win copies of this book and Skype with Lisa Unger at a book club! Our book club decides what to read based on the person who is hosting that month. We read mostly historical fiction, but I love that we get a little bit of everything based on the personalities of everyone in the club. We are all so different! We are even different in how we get the books that we read. Some of us buy them for our Kindle or Nooks, and some of us read the paper copies. Some of us buy them at Barnes and Noble or Amazon, and some of us check them out from the library. My favorite part about our book club is everyon’s unique personality. I love that it brings such different perspectives to the books we’ve read and we learn a lot from each other and we are able to see the book in new ways each time we meet.

Hello Lisa…We are Monday Night Book Club. Our group meets the first Monday of the month and takes suggestions from the members, giving everyone a chance to pick a book for discussion. We read all genres and authors, fiction and non-fiction, although, we’ve stayed away from True Crime, so far. :-) We read fiction mostly, classics, historical, new releases, whatever a reader recommends. Our members book buying varies, from Amazon.com, checking them out of the library, purchase from Borders or Barnes & Noble, and some members download selections to their Kindles. We’ve had Leonard Pitts Jr call into our meeting to discuss his book BEFORE I FORGET which everyone enjoyed. And, we’ve attended an author event with Father Greg Boyle, for his book TATTOOS ON THE HEART, when we discussed his book, and we’re looking forward to attending a Lisa See event this summer that coincides with our discussion of her book, SHANGHAI GIRLS, and the release of her new book, DREAMS OF JOY. We have ten (10) members in our club that attend faithfully, and we have a few more that come every now and then. We meet at members homes, unless we’re celebrating an event or the Holidays. The year we celebrate of 3rd year of enjoying reading together.

Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read?
    A. my book club is comprised of women from our neighborhood and has been meeting for 7 years. We are an eclectic mix of women from all ages and backgrounds with diverse reading preferences. We meet once a month and the woman hosting the discussion group gets to pick the book we all read – announced at the end of the previous discussion. The process of picking a book that one of us has already read and loves insures there will be great discussion topics as well as a tantalizing teaser when the selection is announced. We’d love to read this one as an exercise in the exciting to mix things up a bit. I hope I win!

Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read?
    A. my book club is comprised of women from our neighborhood and has been meeting for 7 years. We are an eclectic mix of women from all ages and backgrounds with diverse reading preferences. We are a group of teachers who meet every 3 or 4 weeks during the summer to read and discuss a particular book. While we promise to continue into the school year, at most we meet one or two additional times before we end up disbanding until the following summer. Our numbers vary depending on everyone’s summer plans but usually have about 10 in attendance. We get our books through recommendations from other friends or suggestions in the weekly book section of our local paper. We have never attended an author event or spoken to the author. Maybe this will be our first!

I get my books from a variety of places – receive 2nd hand from friends/relatives, buy 2nd hand/used from thrift stores/garage sales, or buy new from various bookstores/stores.
Enjoy reading fiction and suspense/thrillers the most. Have a number of favorite authors whose books I frequently read.
Have only been involved in a book group once – we all chose the book we were going to read together (was a current bestseller at the time).
I would love to be picked to receive this book and share with my book loving friends and relatives!

My book club is called the “Bookies.” We meet once a month except for the summer. Our books are always paperbacks with less than 300 pages(except March and Septembr when the books can be longer). We all help decide what to read. Each spring the Hoover Library (surburb of Birmingham, AL) sponsors a Southern Voices Conference, and many of our members attend together.

We love to choose different styles of books for our book club. We do not stick to any specific genre. Our selections are usually suggestions from all members who then vote on the book to read. In the past we read a book by a local author and had the chance to have her attend our meeting.

The recommendations for our book club comes from one of the fifteen members of our group. Our process has evolved over time. When we first began, it was a formal process with one meeting per year devoted to making the selections with a vote from each member. Now, the hostess selects the book for the meeting that she is hosting. Members should have already read the book they are recommending. Since there are 15 members, we get a wide selection of genres and topics; which is one of the great reasons to be in a book club. To read books that you would not have selected on your own. Sometimes, you come away with a new appreciation for an author or type of book you were unfamiliar with. Sometimes, you confirm your dislike for a genre, subject or author but, we always have lively discussions with insights on the books and/or our fellow members. Never dull!

If our book club were selected to receive a call/Skype from Lisa, that would add a whole new dimension for our discussion-Lisa’s research methods, character development, writing process, etc.
It would be so great! Thanks for the opportunity.

Our book group meets monthly and is a group of very diverse women whose taste in genre varies like crazy! We are always looking for new and different books or pieces of literary works to read and discuss. One of our most recent meetings included meeting in a local cemetery where we discussed a local author’s mystery book which took place on the grounds on which we had a picnic lunch! Fun, laughter, wonderful discussions but most importantly, good times shared with very special friends!

Although my group is small (my 2 best friends, me, and my cousin via Skype) we get a lot of reading done! We read 2-3 books a month, and I read 1-2 more on my own. Everybody gets to chose a book, any genre of their choice. We go to many author events and hang out at Barnes & Nobles often!! My favorite was meeting Tia McCollors at a book release luncheon/party, where her guests were other writers like Sherri Lewis and Tiffany Warren. We bought autographed copies of their books and took pictures! I like the smaller more intimate gatherings, we find the larger events overwhelming, like when tried to see Steve Harvey and Joyce Meyer. We read Lisa Unger’s Fragile in January (my choice) and we are excited about “Darkness My Old Friend”.

We have had several book club chats with authors. Every chat has been great. The author chat has made a good book, even better and a mediocre book much better. It’s interesting hearing what the author has to say about their characters and writing style. Many times we ponder situations and characters during our book club discussions. The chat takes our discussion to another level.

Our book club is very socially active, always trying to tie in a book with an event – a movie, play, restaurant, field trip, or author talk. Recently we have heard Chris Bohjalian, Jodi Picoult, Elizabeth Berg, Katherine Howe, Greg Mortenson, and next week we are going to see Kathryn Stockett in Brookline, MA. All these side trips/events enhance our reading and strengthen our friendships! I love my book club!!

we get most of our selections from recommendations from friends or someone within our group. then it is general consensus from the group about what to read. we then see if the book is available in our local library and if not, we choose another book. we email each other with other choices and then make a selection.

We all own e-reading devices, but most of us always purchase a hard copy of the book from our favorite local bookstore. We have never had an author visit or call in but have use “web” interviews with authors and other media. We read all varieties of books and try to choose 3 or 4 months in advance. Our selections are made by group vote and recommendations from our members.

I started seriously reading when I moved from GA to take care of my ailing mother-in-law. My wife and I moved in with her in her house, but the TV was in strict control of my mother-in-law. Wow, no TV for almost 7 years! She would only watch news shows where the hosts and guests would argue all the time. So I turned to the local library and started reading novels. I read anything I thought interesting and I found out that I liked a lot of differing authors and genres. Some of the most interesting were the unexpected. I got hooked on Luke Short and Max Brand. Then Lee Child and Lisa Gardner and other detective/police/medical thriller writers. I discovered Agatha Christie and I read a lot of biographies. I love R.E. Howard and H.P.Lovecraft. I guess I should be grateful for the non-TV activites I have had to exchange for the TV. Actually, I find the books are more fulfilling and interesting than the movies they make out of them.

I have recently joined a book club with a few friends from church. Our kids go to school together and we’ve gotten to know each other through school activities and chitchatting in the parking lot waiting to pick kids up. We read a wide variety of books and take turns making recommendations, mostly borrowing from the library or taking turns reading a copy someone has bought. We read a lot of women’s fiction, some of it could be called “chick lit” but we don’t really stick to any particular themes; just whatever looks interesting and compelling. We call ourselves The Knit Wit Book Club, because at one meeting, one of our members taught us how to knit while we talked about the book of the month :)

I love following directions! It’s one of my favorite things to do. My book group gets most of our reading recommendations via the local indie bookstore, Nicola’s Books. We decide as a group what to read by voting (majority rules). We’ve mostly read fiction, but we wouldn’t be opposed to any other genre; we like all! I mainly buy my books at the aforementioned bookstore–they give teachers a 20% discount!–and while I thought I would be the LAST PERSON on THE PLANET to go digital, I did buy a Nook Color a month or so ago. In other words, I like both: the Nook Color for travel and physical books for reading at any other time. Our group has attended local author events at both indie bookstores and chains. To us, that experience is like frosting on the brownie (the brownie being simply reading the book and carving out time to discuss it during dinner at a great restaurant). Hoping to win! :) ~Penny, the SpottedGirl

I absolutely live for thrillers! I love to read, and I think Lisa Unger is a fantastic author! Our book club’s reading recommendations are mostly from reviews we have read and from research we each do about our favorite authors.

We meet on the 1st Tuesday of every month, 12 months a year. We were the first book club started in our little community and we have been together for more than 15 years with very few changes in the original members. We currently have 16 members. Each Fall we each submit possible book titles for our next year’s reading list along with a little write-up,including genre. The list is then distributed to the members at the next meeting and we have a chance to lobby for our choice before we vote by secret ballot. The leader then collects the ballots and the 12 books receiving the highest votes are selected and also alternates in case of unavailability of a book. The leader then picks the month for each book for the year, usually taking into consideration the length of the book, whether there is a short month or a holiday, etc. Usually the person who recommended the book leads the discussion. We also rate each book we read by each member giving it a rating from 1-10. (We actually had one minus but that was rare) Notebooks are kept so that we can look back over the years. Our group is very varied in age and background but we all love to read and have developed a close bond over the years. Our book choices range all genres and topics. We would love to read this book as a group.

I have a Kindle and I love reading actual books. I find the Kindle very convenient for traveling, Dr’s office waiting, etc. If I really enjoy a book on my Kindle, I find that I want to own the actual book. There is something very satisfying for me to touch a book, hold it in my hands and appreciate it. I can’t do that with my Kindle – but I wouldn’t give up the Kindle either.

I am in two book groups, but one of them reads mysteries exclusively. We get recommendations from all kinds of places, one of them being this newsletter.

I buy books from Amazon and have a Kindle. I also try to support independents, namely my favorite mystery bookstore, The Poisoned Pen, in Scottsdale, AZ.

My mystery group has had call-ins from three different authors – Louise Penny, Betty Webb and Kathryn Casey. All went very well and we were excited to talk with these talented ladies about their writing and mystery series. We’ve not ever done a author event using Skype but there is always a first time.

I really enjoyed Lisa Unger’s previous book, also set in The Hollows, FRAGILE. Look forward to reading this new one!

Our Book Group members read reviews or hear an author interviewed on the radio and then bring their suggestions to the group. We make a list of the ones we think sound interesting and choose one for each month. We order copies through the library, some members buy the book or ebook. We meet at the library with snacks and probably know more about each other’s lives than we’d care to think.

    • Where does your book group get most of its reading recommendations? How do you decide what to read? We all research through magazine recommendations, going on amazon.com and reading reviews and word of mouth from other friends.

    • What genre does your group read the most: fiction, thriller/suspense, historical fiction, memoir/biography? It’s a pretty even mix of fiction and memoir/biography.

    • Where do you buy most of your books? Do you read physical books, eBooks, both? I buy most of my books from http://www.abebooks.com and it’s always physical books!!

    • Has your group ever attended an author event together or had an author call in for a chat? If so, tell us about it! Yes! We just went to the Kristin Hannah book signing in Dallas and Raleigh!

My book club meets at our local library the first Monday of every month. We’re able to request book club books through our library. Once a year, we put down our top 24 picks from a list of books they have available for book clubs. While we initially supply the list, we’re at the mercy of the person juggling all the book club requests. We have read mysteries, classics, romance, historical fiction–you name, we read it! Our group loves the socialization, and it’s amazing how the books can bring together a group of women ranging in age from mid-thirties to sixty-plus! Our group has never been fortunate enough to Skype or have an author visit, though that would be really cool!

We live in a very small town in South Georgia (albeit we do have a wonderful state university so we aren’t rural hicks) and meet the 4th Tuesday of every month at the public library. Our suggestions are member based and yes, we DO love the printed word in good old fashioned books. Generally speaking we select one of our members to share their newest favorite and most exciting read/author. Our subjects run the complete gamut as we all have very different tastes. We have been fortunate that our area is rich in local authors and so we have hosted many of them in person for readings/signings etc. We are also fortunate that we are also home to a regional literary publication and often draw speakers from there. Personally, I buy most of my books from a local retailer’s online location. I have every other book Lisa has published and have made her the focus of several of my reviews and suggestions so far. We are limited in the numbers of books available as the state of Georgia sadly, via the previous administration, put a moratorium on the library system purchasing many of the newer books. If we all choose to read the same volume, we must draw from various parts of the state in order to do so and many times this is impossible to achieve, thus we have changed our format in order to deal with this situation by selecting individual members review a volume OR choosing just a genre for the group to choose from.

At 61, I am among the youngest members and yes, we do include ANYONE regardless of age or sex to join us. All we require is a love of books.

My BFF is always reading new books and passing them on to me. In fact, she has helped me delve into some of the most fascinating worlds aka books. I would LOVE to be the one to introduce HER to an awesome book. We are on two, but we have our own little “book club”. This is one of the ways we have managed to always keep our friendship new and fascinating—reading. It’s a passion for us both, and one that I hope we can pass on to our children.

My book group chooses their books at a summer picnic, swim and book discussion meeting held at a member’s backyard pool. We all bring a book (or books) we loved, briefly describe them and then we vote. We vote for our 1st, second and third choices (we use pocker chips placed on the books!), add up the votes and that is our reading list for the next year! We almost always end up with a great mix of fiction, non-fiction and a variety of genres. But most important – eveeryone has a voice and everyone is happy.

Last month our book club read Fragile, by Lisa Unger! Once a year we meet to select books. Everyone brings a few ideas and usually some reviews of the book the suggest. We discuss the books and vote on them. It is a fun evening. We usually chose one or two less than a full years worth, so we can add a “Hot” new book if one comes out that we are interested in.

Our book club picks a wide variety of books….haven’t stuck with one genre. I think we have searched on the internet, gotten recs from friends or me I picked one that was an amazon rec for me. We buy at half-price books, internet and regular book stores. A couple of us have Kindle’s or read on our phone.
We have never talked to an author….that would be very cool to be able to do that!!

My bookclub rotates hostessing duties and the hostess picks the books. It is great to be exposed to genres that you normally would not pick. We have had two “author” events in the past – one was a phone call with an author and the other was a little more unique. We are from a suburb in Denver and read a book by a local author about a murder in one of the downtown hotels. We were able to set up our meeting for that month at the hotel and had the author come and speak with us – very interesting!

Sounds amazing- I still love to hold a book and turn the pages- I had a feeling about darkness as a child- sometimes the feeling comes back. Not in a book group- just enjoying reading and passing the book along for another’s enjoyment!

In our club we read all kinds of genres. The person at who’s house it is at is the person that picks the book. I have read many good books that I wouldn’t have read otherwise this way.

I buy my books at our local independent bookstore. They’ve been going strong for 36 years by the same two owners! It’s amazing. I definitely do not read ebooks. I am a strict physical book kinda gal.

    • Has your group ever attended an author event together or had an author call in for a chat? If so, tell us about it!

The book group I run is very large (91 registered members!) and unconventional, so no activity we do involves everyone. People pick and choose what they want to participate in. But certainly members have gotten together for all sorts of literary events: author readings, book signings, literary festivals, book sales, and we’ve even done outings to the theater for literary adaptations. We’re an active group in a major city, so there are all kinds of fantastic opportunities to take advantage of!

Our group takes turns choosing the books. Generally we have each person bring two or three suggestions every 4 or 5 months, and discuss these suggestions to see if there are multiple objections. Then from the list of those still standing, we alternate between us (about 8 usually) to choose one from the “acceptable” list.

PJ book groups. Cool idea. As long as no one got pulled over coming or going from the group. That would be a tale to tell!

Lisa, you look too young to be able to write so intensely. Quite stunning you are. God has blessed you with a wonderful talent.

My Traveling Book group on Goodreads, which has 187 members, does group and buddy reads. Our group reads can generally have up to 10 people reading and “discussing” the same book, while Buddy Reads are normally 2-3. Since Lisa Unger is a HUGE favorite of the group, I am sure her new book will go over splendidly and our group would love Read It Forward even more than we do now! :)

Hello, Our book club calls itself The Blabbergirls, so named by the young son of one member because we get together and blab, blab, blab. I started this group and all of the women in it work for the same company (except I have since left and work elsewhere now). We work/worked for a college bookstore, not all in the same location at the time we started. We each get to choose what book we will read next when it is our turn to host next. We read fiction, memoirs, historical fiction, thrillers, and more. How do we choose? That’s part of the fun, I guess, we check the bookstore shelves, Goodreads.com, Booksense, online, library, anywhere and everywhere. Yes, we have wine and we also do a dinner of some sort where everyone contributes something. We have grown so close since we started and have learned so very much about each other and we truly care about one another. It’s the best thing I’ve started in a very long time! Thanks. Jean

I am the member of a small book group of 6 co-workers and we each make suggestions for the “next” book to read. Then we vote on which to read, although we have been know to pick a title out of a box when we can’t agree!!
