The Doll, the New Thriller by Taylor Stevens

“A heroine every bit as provocative as Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander.”
~The Dallas Morning News

They took her. Then they took her family. Now she’s coming for retribution.

Information specialist Vanessa Michael Munroe has a reputation for getting things done, often dangerous and not-quite-legal things. Scarred from a life of violence, pursued by her own demons, and as proficient with languages as she is with knives, when a human trafficking ring kidnaps her to transport a high-profile starlet, she’s prepared to destroy those responsible – until she discovers that to save one life, she will condemn the person she loves most.

Plunged into an underground world where women and girls are merchandise and a shadowy figure known as The Doll Maker controls her every move, Munroe must choose who lives, who dies, or find a way to outthink and outsmart a man who holds all the cards. In this high-octane thriller for fans of Lee Child, Barry Eisler, and Robert Ludlum’s Bourne trilogy, Vanessa Michael Munroe will have to fight fast, smart, and furiously to overcome a dangerous nemesis and deliver her trademark brand of justice.

My first impression: I was intrigued by the cover and the dust jacket synopsis. Never having read a Taylor Stevens book before, I was slightly lost at the beginning but quickly got into it. As professional reviewers have mentioned, the main character in the story reminds you quite a bit of Lisbeth Salander–incredibly smart, focused, a little awkward around people, but amazingly dangerous in self-preservation skills. I’m in awe! The story starts with a woman who is kidnapped to perform a mission, and subsequently tells of both her plight and that of her counterpart held as leverage to control her. I loved the writing style and how the chapters bounced back and forth between the two different plot lines, yet managed to keep you engaged the whole time. The book was slow to start but picked up mid-way through with a large plot twist (as a crime junkie, I didn’t see it coming). While I wish I had a little more background on the characters (guess I have to read the previous novel!), I thoroughly enjoyed my intro to Taylor Stevens. I’ll be back for more. Thanks, Read it Forward, for giving me the opportunity to read this novel!

I won a copy of this book, read it, loved it and I’ve passed it on to a friend. I agree with other reviewers that it takes a little while to get into, but once you do, it’s hard to put down. This not usually the genre I enjoy, but maybe I’ve been missing something. Now I’m off to get more of the books in this series!

When I finally got around to reading The Doll, I could not put it down and stayed up until the early hours of the morning finishing it. This is not my usual genre of fun reading, but I will be looking for the other books in the series. Thank you for the giveaway. I’ll be passing it on to my dad who enjoys thrillers!

Great read – fast moving, left you wondering what was next at every turn. Just when you thought there couldn’t be more, there was! I was not aware that there were 2 books before this one when I started reading this book, though you didn’t need to read the first 2 to read this one, which is great! I’m sure the first 2 would have provided a little more insight into the characters but this book was good enough on its own. Now I want to read the first 2! Exciting, captivating, an overall thriller!

*I received this book in a giveaway from RIF. I was not compensated in any way to post my review.
