Here at Read it Forward, we love when authors know their characters inside and out, including their TBR piles. Amy Foster, author of the new science fiction trilogy The Rift Uprising—a heart-thumping cross between a military thriller and speculative narrative—has crafted a list of books her main character Ryn Whittiker loves. In fact, in Ryn’s own words, she calls this list Books for Nerdy Teenage Super Soldiers (like me!). Need we say more?
* * * * *
My name is Ryn Whittiker. I am a Citadel, Designation 573 and leader of Beta Team. But, that’s just my day job—though admittedly, compared to some, my day job is pretty insane. I am part of an elite group of young cybernetically-enhanced soldiers that police one of 14 Rifts or doorways to the Multiverse; more specifically, an infinite number of other Earths. Think about it, the concept of infinite Earths means that not just humans evolved as the dominant species. It’s my job to protect the general population from snake people, dinosaurs, Insectoid creatures and a host of other hostiles that would give even the most hardcore horror enthusiast nightmares. Sometimes I kick ass, sometimes I get my ass handed to me. It just depends on the day. I do all this in secret. Although lately, I’ve been starting to wonder why in the hell someone like me would be in charge of something so huge. It is crazy, right?
So, I’m incredibly fast, insanely strong and totally brilliant, which makes me an instant hit at parties. Just kidding. I don’t go to parties. I’m too worried about what’s happening when I’m not on duty to ever really let loose (did someone say control issues? No? Well, somebody should.) Instead, I spend my evenings with my team or at home in my room binge-watching TV shows or reading. Reading is my escape. Ever wonder what a teenage super soldier might be into? Well, I can’t speak for all of us, but here’s a sample of some of the books I love.
